Where Wisdom Blossoms: Pandora Thomas

Pandora-Earthseed-regenerative-agriculture

In the heart of Sonoma County lies EARTHseed Farm—a sanctuary amidst the rolling hills where Afro-Indigenous wisdom meets regenerative agriculture. More than a farm, it’s a living testament to the power of cultural heritage and sustainable living.  Founded in 2021 by Pandora Thomas—an environmental educator, permaculture designer, and visionary—this 14-acre solar-powered organic farm invites us to remember: the land doesn’t just sustain us; it speaks, heals, and connects us.

Reconnecting the Roots

EARTHseed Farm isn’t just about growing food—it’s about growing relationships. Rooted in Afro-Indigenous permaculture principles, the farm is a space where communities of color can reclaim their bond with the land and their “more-than-human kin.”  Black and Indigenous hands have over generations developed unique approaches to tilling, nurturing, and protecting the earth.  EARTHseed invites people from all walks of life learn from and activate these practices onsite.

Pandora Thomas: A Visionary Leader

If EARTHseed Farm is a movement, Pandora Thomas is its guiding force. With over 25 years of experience as a teacher, writer, and designer, her work bridges ecological principles with social transformation.  She has designed curricula for—and taught—groups worldwide, from Iraqi and Indonesian youth to formerly incarcerated individuals, always carrying one truth: regeneration begins with reconnection. EARTHseed is the physical manifestation of that belief, making it the first Afro-Indigenous permaculture farm in Sonoma County.

We first met Pandora at the Blue Note Jazz Festival in 2023, hosted by Robert Glasper. The room pulsed with the late-night alchemy of Madlib, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Glasper himself, all underscored by the electric unpredictability of Dave Chappelle holding court nearby.  Somewhere in that sonic tapestry, amidst deep basslines and deeper conversations, we connected. As the night stretched on, we found ourselves outside, sharing junk food and philosophy, perched on the hoods of our cars, talking about life, passion, and purpose.  It was clear: kindred spirits find each other.

Cultivating Community and Resilience

At its core, EARTHseed is about empowerment through education. The farm offers:

🌱 Hands-on permaculture workshops
🌱 "U-pick" harvesting experiences
🌱 Training programs for climate resilience
🌱 Immersive retreats designed to reconnect people to the land

Visitors don’t just witness sustainability in action—they live it. EARTHseed invites us all to experience the profound shift that happens when we reestablish our relationship with the soil beneath our feet.

Sankofa: Looking Back to Move Forward

At the heart of EARTHseed’s philosophy is the West African principle of Sankofa: we must know where we came from to understand where we’re going.  For long periods of western history, black and Indigenous knowledge systems were dismissed in conversations about sustainability, but scholarship focusing on these communities in recent years has started to take a second look.  These traditions offer a blueprint for another way we can live with nature.  In this way, EARTHseed is both a reclamation and a revolution, ensuring that these ancestral methods are not just preserved but actively shared and practiced today.

Visit & Support

EARTHseed Farm welcomes visitors by appointment, offering seasonal "U-pick" experiences from July to November. Come walk the land, learn, and grow.
