Daru Jones: The Rhythmic Innovator Bridging Genres

Daru Jones stands as a dynamic force in the music world, seamlessly blending genres and redefining drumming's role across various musical landscapes. Renowned for his distinctive style, Jones has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, leaving an indelible mark on contemporary music.  So much so, in the words of Marcus Machado, Daru has become the 'Buddy Miles' of this generation.

Early Life and Musical Foundation

Hailing from the Midwest, with roots stretching to the East Coast and the South, and now based on the West Coast, Daru Jones is a genre-bending, award-winning musician known for his work on Lazaretto with Jack White. His musical journey was deeply shaped by his upbringing in a religious household, where early exposure to gospel music laid a strong foundation, fostering his rhythmic sensibilities and a deep appreciation for soulful expression. This immersion in church music cultivated a unique groove that would later define his signature style.

Jones’ versatility as a drummer is evident in his ability to seamlessly navigate between rock’s raw energy and hip-hop’s rhythmic pulse. His extensive list of collaborations spans across genres and generations—whether onstage, in the studio, or live on tour—showcasing his adaptability and musicianship. He has worked with an impressive roster of artists, including Jack White, Raphael Saadiq, Tony! Toni! Toné!, Jon B, Gloria Gaynor, Bootsy Collins, Kanye West, Pete Rock, Rag’n’Bone Man, Madlib, Slum Village, Jamie Lidell, Talib Kweli, Dwight Yoakam, Nas, Pharoahe Monch (th1rt3en), The Lox, Pee Wee Ellis, Lorenzo Jovanotti, Queen Latifah, Black Milk, and his sister Rena, as part of Daru & Rena. With an ever-growing body of work, Jones continues to push musical boundaries, solidifying his reputation as one of the most dynamic drummers in modern music

Recent Projects and Contributions

In 2023, Jones hinted at the release of a new solo album, reflecting his continuous evolution as an artist. He expressed a desire to channel the same energy he has contributed to other artists into his own project, signaling a new chapter in his musical journey.  And don't sleep on Jones' recent participation in the Bootsy Collins's project, "The JB’s Tribute Pastor P," alongside notable artists like Fred Wesley and Harry Mack. This endeavor pays homage to the legendary James Brown's backing band, The JB's, blending classic funk elements with contemporary influences. Check the grooves.

Influence and Legacy

Jones's impact extends beyond performance; he actively mentors emerging drummers, emphasizing the importance of versatility and authenticity, and walks tall with a swagger and unique fashion unto himself.  His unique fusion of styles, from rhythm rooms to the runway, continue to inspire a new generation of artists, solidifying his status as a trailblazer in the community.  Stay tuned for his drop with Unknown Union; we've got something dope in the works.
