Rise! On Paul Oakley Stovall

In the vibrant tapestry of art, culture, and history that Unknown Union seeks to celebrate, few individuals embody our mission as profoundly as Tony Award winner, Paul Oakley Stovall. Since our paths first crossed in 2023, we've been continually inspired by Paul's unwavering commitment to storytelling that amplifies underrepresented voices.

A Multifaceted Artist and Advocate

Paul's journey is a testament to the power of versatility in the arts. As an actor, he brought depth and gravitas to the role of George Washington in the first national tour of Hamilton, captivating audiences nationwide. His portrayal not only showcased his immense talent but also highlighted the complexities of historical narratives, resonating with our ethos of exploring diverse perspectives.  Also see his portrayals in the all-black production Fat Ham, playing the pivotal lead roles of Pap and Rev.

Beyond the stage, Paul's prowess as a playwright has been equally impactful. His play, Immediate Family, directed by the esteemed Phylicia Rashad, delves into themes of identity, acceptance, and familial bonds. The production's exploration of these universal themes aligns seamlessly with Unknown Union's dedication to crafting stories that reflect the multifaceted human experience.

Paul's directorial vision has also broken new ground.  His directorial debut, Gods and Monsters, premiered at Chicago's Theater Wit in May 2024, showcasing his ability to bring myth and history into dialogue with modern audiences.  As we await his next project, directing the world premier stage adaptation of James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room, we are reminded that his work continues both on and off the set.

Paul’s recent work with students at the Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk, Virginia, and with Blumey Awards students on the Life Rules cabaret experience in Charlotte, North Carolina, underscore his unwavering dedication to fostering the next generation of artists. Through playwriting and performance, he continues to inspire young storytellers to use their voices to bring meaningful narratives to life.

This commitment to storytelling and knowledge-transference extends far beyond the stage for Paul. In his featured appearance on the AmRev360 podcast, Paul discusses the power of narrative in shaping our understanding of history, particularly in relation to the American Revolution. His insights align with Unknown Union’s dedication to preserving and sharing the histories of underrepresented communities.
